What do Democrats stand for?

From DailyKOS, a suggestion for the Democrats:

We all talk about the Democratic Party standing for something. Well, there it is.

The party of personal liberty.

It's a winner, both tactically (helping us win elections), and philosophically. Government can and should lend a helping hand. But it should also protect our individual freedoms from those (like Santorum) who would tear them away.

Well, it's one sure way to differentiate the Democrats from the Republicans, and it might help remind some people what we stand to lose if things keep going as they have been.

Do read the entire piece - he has some good points about Liberitarians and how they might just fit in with the Democrats better than the Republicans - and wouldn't that be a boost next November?

I just hope someone passes this on to Terry McAuliffe at the DNC. Or maybe a lot of someones. ;)

Personally, while I like the idea of putting the focus on personal liberty, I don't know that the Democrats are a party to trust when it comes to carrying out the agenda they promise. Consider that in 1992 they pushed National Health Care hard as part of the platform and that today we are still without it. Consider that Clinton kept up the bombing and embargo of Iraq throughout his presidency. Consider that every one of the Felonious Five who selected the Usurper was approved by Democrat-dominated Senates.

Will the Democrats really restore personal liberty? Or will they only make a few cosmetic changes, while continuing to let the most harmful tumors grow? They've got to show some real backbone and some commitment to change before I hand them my vote again.

Personally, I am undecided on wholeheartedly choosing to support the Republican party/Demo party. Supporting Bush 100% seemed reasonable until I found that the administration was not fully concentrating on terror as was promised. To say that the terrorist camps found in Northern Iraq were miniscule would be a large understatement, as opposed to the camps found in Afghanistan. My idea of an ideal president is very simple...one who follows through on each promise they make. I'm not quite sure that any Democratic elected official is capable of doing so either, so i'm debating on handing my vote to the Green Party in October of 2004.
