Question

Religious conservatives don't want to see stem cell research go forward because it might destroy embryos. Others point out that religious conservatives have no problem with in vitro fertilization, even though there are a large number of embryos destroyed every year when they're abandonded by prospective parents or otherwise end up going unused.

So, how about if instead of throwing away the "leftover" in vitro embryos, we just give THOSE to the scientists to use in stem cell research? That way, no embryos are created just for the purpose of destroying them, embryos that would be going to waste end up being used for a greater purpose, and science gets to progress?

I'm sure I'm NOT the first person to ask this, but it's been bugging me lately, so I figured I'd thow it out there again.

Welcome back! I have wondered that very thing myself, and I think the reason is, they figure that if they don't do that, then conservatives will be more likely to be suckered into eventually implanting ALL those embryos. I think that Bush wants to stop the destroying, too - trying to get people to adopt embryos, or leaving the embryos to just become, over time, too old to be viable. I can SO not wait until he is out of office.

One of the largest problems you would have with using those embryos is consent. I can't imagine too many parents consenting to letting their leftover embyros being used for stem cell research...

Conservative Catholics have a problem with in vitro fertilization and it is also for the same explicit reasons they have a problem with abortion. So, they would oppose your plan. I was raised Catholic. I remember precisely the issue of in vitro technology coming up in religion class in my Catholic school.

Well, of course that suggestion would be dismissed; it is far too logical.
We need a change of administration!!!!!!!!!

Hey. Good blog. I like the look.

I would have to say that there may be some theological (we are talking religion after all) problems with it. I am not particularly conservative, but I wonder if stem cell research from those "left over" embryos is appropriate. Several conservative couples I know plead ignorance about how the technology works, or debate the issue of "life beginning with conception" etc. Some people, depending on the fertility drugs they use, may have triplets or whatever.

I think that technology is a good thing, but how we tinker in it troubles me. Ithink that, perhaps, God works through it giving children to those who desire them. But this is not the case every time. Sometimes we misuse the technology. I think, possibly, that stemcell research may be a misuse of the technology as well as having kids as if they were some kind of comodity.
