Friend of Iraq Blogger Challenge
I've decided to get involved in the Spirit of America "Friends of Iraq Blogger Challenge" being run by The Truth Laid Bear. If you would like to make a donation through different strings, my donation page is here or you can click on the Friends of Iraq banner in the right-hand column.
Spirit of America is an organization that works to raise funds to help with various projects going on in Iraq and Afghanistan as a result of the War on Terror. While I have had many issues with the decision to go to war in Iraq and how the war has been handled thus far, my argument has ALWAYS been with our governmental and military leaders who have made such disasterous choices, and never with the men and women on the ground serving the country, nor with the civilians of Afghanistan and Iraq that we are supposed to be helping. Since the projects and funds of the Spirit of America go toward helping our soldiers help the civilians, I feel it is a very worthwhile cause to donate to, and hope that you will agree.
I have chosen to have donations made through different strings benefit the Arabic Blogging Tool and Viral Freedom projects.
We are funding the development of an Arabic blogging (Web logging) tool and, with donor support, we will host the blogs at no cost to the bloggers. This will allow blogs to be created easily. It will give voice to those working for freedom and democracy in the Arab world. And it will enable them to more easily connect with and share ideas with their peers. As many of you may know, I have been homebound for several years, and I have found that being able to maintain a blog helps remind me that I'm still a part of this world, and that I do have a voice that can be heard. While Afghanis and Iraqis may not be literally stuck in their homes, they are still very isolated from the rest of the world right now, and being able to reach out to each other and to the rest of us through blogging is something that can help give them a sense of empowerment and a way of getting their own messages out about what's happening in their areas.
If you don't feel that the blogging tool would be the best use for your donation, there are many other projects available, as well as an unrestricted fund which collects money to be used for whichever project currently needs it the most. You can find other projects being supported by other blogs in the challenge at the main challenge donation page or donate to the Unrestricted fun through The Truth Laid Bare's donation page.
Please take a few minutes to look over the Spirit of America's web site, see what kind of work their doing, and decide if it's a cause you want to support. As I said, I think it's a worthwhile one, and I hope you will, too.
