Our Cheapass President

I thought it was bad when Bush told Washington DC to pay for the $17 million in security costs from his Inauguration out of their Homeland Security budget, but that wasn't the half of it. Hoffmania collects at least three more cases, twho where Bush's visit to the town has cost thousands or millions in security and one where his plane damaged the town's runway, all of which he's refusing to repay them for.

What's worse? One of those towns isn't even in America. His one-day, sleepover visit to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada cost them $4 million in security, and the federal government is refusing to reimburse them for the costs.

While I find it unbelievable arrogant that he won't reimburse American towns for the costs they incur from his visit, but it's downright embarassing that he won't reimburse a country that is supposed to be one of our closer allies.

There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour. If the President is going to require a certain level of security, we, as a nation, should be pepared to provide it. If his plane causes damage to the town's runway - or other resources are damaged by equipment he requires - the government should be prepared to absorb that cost. To refuse to do so should be simply unacceptable.
