Personal vs. Private
There's been a lot of coverage lately in the leftie blogs about James "Jeff Gannon" Guckert, a conservative activist who was granted access to the White House press pool, Presidential press conferences and possibly to classified CIA information. One big part of the story has been the discovery that prior to becoming a White House correspondent (and for at least a few months thereafter), Guckert was apparently working as a male prostitute.
Interestingly, there are some - including many conservatives - who are upset at what they are calling the "invasion" of Guckert's privacy.
If we were just talking about whether or not Gucker is gay, that would be one thing. I would agree that homosexuality in and of itself shouldn't be considered something "newsworthy" or included in an investigation of his other activities. But that's not the case here. What we're talking about here is gay prostitution. In addition to being a crime, prostitution is also a business. It involves advertising services to and interacting with the public. Once you start posting nude pictures of yourself on a website, advertising your services on a variety of "find a hooker" pages and have customers posting "reviews" of your performance - all out where it can be found by anyone who wants to look for it - its rather difficult to claim that commenting on it is somehow an invasion of your privacy. You've chosen to put it all out there - your expectation is that people will find your advertisements and contact you to purchase your ... well, you, when you get right down to it. This just isn't private behaviour.
